Grace

Grace  2001  23” x 76 x 45  bronze edition of 24    available

Grace is a larger than life bronze sculpture of a reclining female. This image results from an evolution of sculptural images that surprisingly began with a double life size male figure in a bathtub. Bather was a double life size mixed media sculpture that Phelps created in 1984 as part of his Thesis Exhibition. It depicted a male with a dried cracked mud-like surface bathing in a tub that was

itself sinking into the floor. That image led to a small scale bronze sculpture of a female bathing in a sinking tub. San Antonio art collector Barry Solomon saw that small bronze at Hahn Ross Gallery in Santa Fe and commissioned Phelps to create the double life size sculpture Nancy. Grace is a further incarnation of the bathing figure at a slightly smaller scale than Nancy.
