Biography David L Phelps

David Phelps is a critically acclaimed and internationally collected contemporary sculptor known for his large and small-scale bronze sculptures. Raised on his family's farm in California's central valley, his artistry is deeply rooted in those early experiences, surrounded by water and influenced by the threat of drought. His figurative bronzes reflect this upbringing, appearing to emerge from the ground with a unique blend of introspection and humor.

Phelps pursued his passion for art by earning a BA from Humboldt State University in California and an MFA in Sculpture from The University of Oklahoma. His artistic journey includes a six month residency at the Kohler Co. Arts in Industry Program, which helped kick off his success with large scale public art commissions. His works, which range up to four times life-size, are characterized by a serene contemplation and a subtle sense of humor.

Throughout his career, Phelps has received prestigious awards such as a regional NEA Fellowship and has undertaken significant commissions, including the "Desert Wildlife" installation at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. His sculptures can be found in public and private collections across the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia, and more.

With a portfolio that includes monumental contemporary figurative artwork in bronze, cast concrete, and fabricated steel, David Phelps continues to captivate viewers with his strikingly alive sculptures that challenge perceptions and evoke meaningful contemplation on the connections between humanity and landscape.
